How to use the SCC and mastitis cost calculator

Start with the figures you know: cows milked, annual litres per cow, average bulk-tank SCC, months when an SCC bonus was missed, mastitis cases and the likely cost of each case. The calculator helps estimate mastitis costs and uses typical Irish values where you do not have an exact figure. Change any default that does not match your herd.

What the result shows

The estimate combines the visible cost of recorded mastitis cases with the SCC bonus that may have been missed. It also shows the broader Teagasc benchmark separately, so the same loss is not counted twice. The result is a planning figure, not a promise of savings.

How to read the estimate

Use the total to see where better prevention, detection and milking routine may have the greatest value. Compare the result with your own milk statements, veterinary costs, discarded milk and treatment records. If the estimate looks high, check the inputs before making a decision.

What to do next

A high figure does not identify the cause of an SCC problem. Review milking technique, liner condition, machine performance, cow environment, dry-cow management and treatment records with the right advisers.
